In 2004 the Technische Universität Berlin, the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Freie Universität Berlin initiated the programme "ProFiL. Professionalisation of Women in Research and Teaching: Mentoring – Training – Networking" in order to support highly qualified female scholars in their quest to attain a full professorship. The three universities have thus committed themselves to the promotion of young researchers with regard to both: excellence and gender equality.
By combining mentoring, seminars and training sessions on issues of specific interest to academics and strategic networking, the ProFiL Programme promotes the development of its participants. For a period of one year, the participants are supported in the further advancement of their career and prepared for the forms of future leadership and managerial demands that belong to the demands that are associated with a professorship in the context of new forms of higher education management.

The cooperating universities hope to benefit from the upcoming alternation of generations and aim to increase the share of women holding professorships in a medium- to long-term period of time. These institutions seek to exploit existing synergies in order to improve the support provided to female scholars and to implement new methods of leadership development in higher education.
In February 2007 the pilot phase in which 107 female researchers participated ended very successfully. The external evaluation confirmed the high quality of the programme. The benefits that the programme offered its participants, the ProFiL concept and the process management were all rated “very good” by the participants. The presidents of the three Berlin universities therefore decided to extend the ProFiL Programme.
